What is Companion Care?
It’s care that fills the gap between medical support and daily life —easing loneliness, supporting mental health, and helping people feel truly connected again.
Companion care provides social, emotional, and practical support to individuals who wish to remain at home safely and independently. It's human connection designed to ease loneliness, support mental health, and make daily life more enjoyable.
Our caregivers don’t just “do tasks.” They listen, engage, and create moments that matter. Whether that’s sharing stories, preparing meals together, or taking a stroll around the block, we focus on connection first - because feeling seen and heard is essential to quality of life. Our companion care services are RN-led and available across Calgary and surrounding communities.
Personalized Companion Care in Calgary

Gentle walks or light exercise.
Reading, puzzles, listening to music or creative hobbies.
Outings to community or cultural events.

Reminiscing and memory-support activities.

The Compass Rose Care Difference
Holistic, Human-Centered Care
We take a whole-person approach — nurturing physical, emotional, and cognitive wellness together.
Locally Owned and Operated by a Master's-prepared Registered Nurse
Compass Rose Care is proudly Canadian and Calgary-based. Our clients are our neighbours, not numbers. All of our care is organized, planned and overseen by RNs.
Consistent Care, Familiar Faces
You’ll see the same trusted companions regularly, creating a sense of comfort and continuity.
Flexible Care
From a helpful 3 hour visit to a full day or 24/7 support - adaptable as your needs evolve.
Trained and Vetted Professionals
In Alberta, private home care isn't provincially regulated. Anyone can open an agency with just a business license. That's why we hold ourselves to a much higher standard. Our caregivers are carefully chosen through strict recruitment practices, certified, thoroughly screened, bonded, insured and supported every step of the way to deliver care that's safe, skilled and full of heart.
The Benefits of Companion Care
When care goes beyond routine and becomes relationship-based, remarkable things happen. Clients often experience:
Reduced loneliness and depression
Renewed confidence and independence
Improved memory and mental stimulation
Healthier eating and activity habits
Greater peace of mind for families
Companion care helps people rediscover meaning in their day — and families regain balance, knowing their loved one is happy and supported.
How It Works
It all starts with a simple call — and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your loved one is supported by professionals who care like family.
Complimentary Care Discovery Call
We begin with a conversation to understand your needs, preferences and goals.
Personalized Care Planning
Our RN team develops a tailored companion care plan that balances support and independence.
Caregiver Matching
We thoughtfully pair you with a caregiver whose personality and approach align with yours. To ensure a smooth start, our RNs also complete a warm handover on the caregiver's first shift, setting the stage for comfort, trust, and quality care from day one.
Ongoing Support and Communication
Our RNs regularly check in to adjust care as needed and are available to consult if you need to reach out, ensuring quality, comfort, and peace of mind.
Family Involvement and Peace of Mind
We view care as a partnership. Our Calgary companion care team keeps families involved every step of the way. Families are encouraged to stay involved through open communication and shared decision-making. Our RN Care Coordinator provides regular updates and is always available to discuss changes or new goals.
Knowing that your loved one is cared for by professionals who treat them with dignity allows families to focus on what truly matters — quality time together.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Companion care focuses on social connection and everyday support - things like conversation, outings, meal prep, or light housekeeping. It’s meant to reduce loneliness and help someone stay engaged at home, but it does not require clinical training.
Caregiver services (sometimes called “personal care”) go a step further. This level of support may include mobility assistance, medication reminders, bathing, dressing, and monitoring changes in health or behaviour. These tasks should only be delivered by someone with formal health-care training and accountability.
At Compass Rose Care, we treat both types of care with the same level of professionalism. Even when a family only needs companionship, we staff the role with a certified Health Care Aide (HCA), not an informal helper. Every member of our team is trained, registered on the Alberta HCA Directory, and backed by ongoing RN oversight, charting, and communication with families.
The result? Your loved one receives meaningful companionship and the reassurance that a skilled professional is present, attentive, and able to notice early changes in health before they become major concerns.
-
Companion care with Compass Rose Care starts at $70 per hour, with no hidden fees — just clear, honest pricing. What sets us apart is that this isn’t simply the cost of hourly care. It includes professional RN oversight, proactive chart reviews, regular communication with families and care partners, and dedicated caregiver support — all designed to give you peace of mind and your loved one exceptional care.
As an approved provider with Alberta’s Self Directed-Care (Client Directed Home Care Program), eligible families can also offset the hourly cost through program funding, making high-quality care more accessible.

The term “caregiver” can mean many things. It’s often used to describe family members, friends, neighbours, or untrained helpers who support someone at home. While caregivers provide valuable emotional and practical help, there is no standardized training, regulation, or competency requirement for the role.
A Health Care Aide (HCA) is different. HCAs are trained, certified professionals with a clearly defined provincial curriculum, demonstrated competencies, and registration on the Alberta HCA Directory. In February 2026, HCAs will become a regulated profession, adding even greater accountability and protection for families across Alberta.
At Compass Rose Care, we’ve been ahead of this shift from day one. HCAs aren’t just part of our team — they are our team. We exclusively hire certified HCAs, even for companion care and respite care, because your loved one deserves more than someone simply “being there”. Our HCAs work under RN supervision, follow structured care plans, and document every visit so families stay informed and confident.
This is the difference between basic supervision and professional care – between someone who is simply present and someone who is trained, accountable, and deeply committed to your loved one’s well-being.
-
All Compass Rose Care companions hold a Health Care Aide (HCA) or Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate from a Canadian program and maintain active registration on the Alberta HCA Directory. (In Western Canada, these certified caregivers are typically called HCAs, while in Eastern Canada they are often referred to as PSWs — both roles share similar training and responsibilities.)
HCA/PSW certification programs in Canada generally run 8–10 months and include training in personal care, mobility, communication, clinical skills, and basic medication administration (such as oral medications, patches, creams, inhalers, etc.), along with supervised practicums. Program admission typically requires Grade 12 completion and English proficiency.
Beyond formal qualifications, we hire HCAs who excel in essential soft skills - empathy, patience, clear communication, respect for client dignity, and strong problem-solving abilities. Every HCA is supported by RN leadership and ongoing training to ensure safe, consistent, and compassionate care.
-
For most clients we can begin services within a few days of their consultation. We take time to understand your needs and ensure the right caregiver match — providing both efficiency and peace of mind.
